The Type 99 rifle or Type 99 short rifle ( Kyukyū -shiki tan-shōjū ) was a bolt-action rifle of the Arisaka design used by the Imperial Japanese Army During World War II

During the Second Sino-Japanese War in the 1930s, the Japanese soon discovered that the 7.7 mm shells fired by their Type 92 heavy machine guns in China were superior to the 6.5 × 50 mm shells of their Type 38 guns. This necessitated the development of a new gun to replace the outclassed Type 38, and eventually standardized on a single rifle cartridge. The Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) developed the Type 99 based on the Type 38 gun but with 7.7 mm caliber. The Type 99 was produced in nine different arsenals. Seven arsenals are located in Japan, with two others located at Mukden in Manchukuo and Jinsen in Korea.

The IJA intended to completely replace the Type 38 with the Type 99 at the end of the war. However, the outbreak of the Pacific War never allowed the army to completely replace the Type 38 so the IJA was seen using the Type 38 more frequently in the Greater East Asia wars. This type 99 rifle was only seen in the IJA battle in late 1943, and was commonly used by its relative, the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) due to logistical problems.
