Challenger 2 Ammunition Pack (L27A1, L31A7, L23A1, and L29A1)

🔎General Information

This is a detailed 3D model for four of the British Challenger 2 tank ammunition: 120mm L27A1 Armour-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot Tracer (APFSDS-T), L31A7 High-Explosive Squash Head (HESH), L23A1 APFSDS, and L29A1 Practice APFSDS. These rounds are designed for use with the L30A1 120 mm rifled gun on Challenger 2 tank. It is suitable for 3D printing and animations featuring a cutaway version, making it excellent for display, training, and enthusiasts.

The British Challenger 2’s L30A1 120 mm rifled gun is one of the last main battle tank guns to retain rifling, which imparts spin to projectiles and allows excellent performance with HESH ammunition.
The L31A7 is the current service HESH round, designed so its plastic explosive warhead squashes flat against the target before detonating, creating a powerful shockwave that spalls armour from the inside. This makes L31 HESH highly effective against fortifications, light armour, older tanks, buildings, and even modern MBTs where full penetration isn’t required.
In contrast, the L27A1 (CHARM 3) APFSDS uses a depleted-uranium long-rod penetrator for direct kinetic defeat of heavy armour, while the older L23A1 is a tungsten-based APFSDS round.
The L29A1 designation is much less commonly referenced and is generally considered a training-related round, with L31A7 remaining the primary HESH type in British service.
